Lesson 1: The History & Foundation of Bitcoin

๐Ÿง  Learning Objectives

Students will understand the origins, purpose, and mechanics of Bitcoin, the meaning of its White Paper, and how white papers serve as foundational documents in blockchain projects.

Section 1: The History of Bitcoin

Early attempts at digital money: eCash, HashCash, Bit Gold.

The 2008 Financial Crisis exposed the fragility of centralized banking.

Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System white paper on October 31, 2008.

In January 2009, the Genesis Block was mined, embedding the message:

'The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.'

This symbolized Bitcoin's mission: independence from centralized banking and government monetary control.

Section 2: Understanding Bitcoin

Decentralized Ledger: No single authority controls Bitcoin. Every node verifies and records transactions.

Blockchain Technology: A chronological chain of blocks that store transaction data verified by cryptography.

Mining: The process of validating transactions and adding them to the blockchain using computational power.

Supply Cap: Only 21 million BTC will ever exist, ensuring scarcity and preventing inflation.

Wallets & Keys:

โ€ข Public Key: Similar to an account number, shared to receive Bitcoin.

โ€ข Private Key: Like a password or PIN, used to authorize transactions.

Transactions: Peer-to-peer exchanges without intermediaries or banks.

Section 3: The Bitcoin White Paper

Authored by Satoshi Nakamoto (2008).

Title: Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.

Introduced trustless transactions through cryptography and decentralized consensus.

Proposed the proof-of-work mechanism for verifying blocks.

Described how incentives would maintain network security and stability.

Served as the blueprint for the entire blockchain industry.

Section 4: What is a White Paper?

A white paper is a detailed technical and strategic document outlining a problem and the proposed solution.

In blockchain, it communicates:

โ€ข Project purpose and vision

โ€ข Technical structure and tokenomics

โ€ข Economic model and governance

โ€ข Market opportunity and impact

It establishes credibility and transparency for investors and developers.
